Like so many others who first watch Escaflowne I could not for the life of me tell if Dilandau was male or female. Not only are his looks somewhat feminine but also his voice actor is a woman by the name of Minami Takayama. She was born on May 5th, 1964 in Tokyo but was named Izumi Arai, which she later changed to Minami Takayama. Dilandau is not the first male role Takayama voiced for; her amazing voice enables her to do a wide range of voices, be they male or female. But she is not confined just to voice acting, she is also known more for her involvement in the J-Pop music industry. From composing her own music with synthesizers to being 1/2 of the duo Two-Mix along with Nagano Shiina, who are best known for their music on the Gundam Wing soundtrack, Minami proves to the world that she can be a big-wig in the music biz as well. Two-Mix itself has become a J-Pop staple in Japan, with its catchy lyrics and pounding techno and dance beats, it has even become popular with the dance craze Dance Dance Revolution. My personal favorite of theirs is Rhythm Emotion, which is the second opening song to Gundam Wing. They have also done music for anime series such as Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, Detective Conan and Rurouni Kenshin, and others. It did not take long for Takayama to become one of Japan's leading voice actors her most popular roles to date are Dilandau in both Vision of Escaflowne and A Girl in Gaea, Tendou Nabiki in Ranma 1/2 and Kiki in Kiki's Delivery Service.
