Name: Dilandau Albatou Age: 15 Hair Color: Silver Eye Color: Garnet Birthday: Moon of Red 8 (Equivalent to August 8) Birthplace: The Zaibach Empire Height: 5 feet 8 inches Weight: 134 pounds Family: None Occupation: General of Zaibach; Leader of the Dragon Slayers Guymelefs used: Alsedies & Oreades Voice: Minami Takeyama (Subbed); Andrew Francis (Dubbed) Debut: Episode 3 - The Gorgeous Swordsman Dilandau Albatou is one of the main villains of the fantasy-enriched anime Vision of Escaflowne. He is one of the generals of the army for the Zaibach Empire and is the leader of the elite DragonSlayers, a group of 15 boys whose mission is to find the white dragon Escaflowne. He is a very important individual to the entire plot of Esca.
As I mentioned his mission is to find Escaflowne and bring it back to the Empire, along the way he comes face to face with Escaflowne's pilot Van Fanel of Fanelia although he didn't know who he was at the time. They didn't hit it off so well and thus starts one of the greatest rivalries in all of anime. Dilandau managed to capture Escaflowne and bring it back to the flying ship called the Vione. There he finds it was Van who was the pilot. Van's comrades come to his rescue and start all kinds of commotion and during this Dilandau decided to finish Van off in a sneak attack. But before he could make a fatal slash, Hitomi, the heroine of the series, warns Van. So they engage in a swordfight and Van cuts Dilandau's right cheek. This makes Dilandau umm… for lack of a better term snap. Dilandau, who is already somewhat emotionally unstable, treasured his handsome looks. This cut was a big hit to his vanity and not to mention pride so now he is overcome with rage and lusts for revenge against Van for ruining his face.
So now Dilandau has two objectives, capture Escaflowne and kill Van. His attempts to kill Van are in vain for Hitomi always rushes to warn Van ahead of time, though they were close calls. In one fateful battle, Van is pushed one step too far and in a blind rage of fury he brought about the demise of the Dragon Slayers. Dilandau is left as the only survivor and he goes even further into madness. As he mourns his lost comrades he is stricken with odd visions that make him nauseous, so he is brought to the sorcerers who are the only ones that Dilandau really fears. The sorcerers see to it that Dilandau does not revert to his original form, which is that of a young girl by the name of Celena Schezar.
When she was just a child, agents of the Zaibach Empire kidnapped Celena. Children were being used as experiments to further the cause of the Empire and Celena was one of them. She was transformed from a gentle girl into the bloodthirsty maniac Dilandau Albatou. Now that his mentality was deemed unstable he started to go back and forth from being himself and Celena. In one episode Dilandau's guymelef crashes and he transforms into Celena who wanders till she comes to her childhood home. She is reunited with her brother Allen Schezar, who is also another on Dilandau's hit list, but the reunion is only temporary. During a visit to their mother's grave, Celena is overcome by Dilandau's personality and she transforms. He escapes with his last of his followers, Jajuka, who is a dog beast man. Dilandau is in a state of shock, (like he could get anymore) but his old ways come back when he has the promise of another battle with Van.
In the last episode, Van and Dilandau have a battle to the death between the two of them but it doesn't go as Dilandau would have thought. Van had become stronger and when he was about to give the final blow, Jajuka threw himself in the way, sacrificing his life for Dilandau's. Before he dies, Jajuka begs Dilandau to revert back to the gentle child he took care of when she was first brought to Zaibach. Again Dilandau has flashbacks of Celena along with Jajuka, and overcome with grief at the thought of being alone, Dilandau permanently transforms into Celena. |
